PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Just another car in traffic, right? Nothing to see here. Until you see a torrent of blue lights in your mirror.
The Pittsfield Police Department is going 'ghost' in its 2016 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor wrapped in 'stealth' graphics.
"[It's] very much like an unmarked vehicle in the sense that it appears black. As soon as any light hits it, all the graphics are high-reflectivity," said Pittsfield Police Officer Matthew Kirchner. "We've had a lot of black and white vehicles for the past few years, and we wanted to try something different this year.
"It allows us to kind of remain a little more low-key," he continued. "If we don't want to be as loud and open in the public in our regularly-marked black and white cars, this will allow us to get closer to a scene or whatever we're working near."
Officer Kirchner designed the graphics himself and says the cruiser will be used solely by the traffic division. And with its blacked-out design, it'll look good doing it.
"It is pretty cool. It's definitely different," he said.
Tough as it may look, you won't want to see its blue lights and push bars in your rear-view mirror. Once this hits patrol, it'll give you more incentive to check your speed.
"We always encourage everybody to drive carefully," said Kirchner, "but this is just one more reason to drive safe."
