GASTON COUNTY -- There is now good news from the Gaston County Animal Care and Control: the shelter has dropped its euthanasia rate from nearly 90 percent back in 2005 to 32 percent in 2015.
The number of strays and surrenders the shelter's taking in has gone down as well.
Animal Care and Enforcement Administrator Kristine Blankenship told Time Warner Cable News encouraging people to spay and neuter their pets played a key role in recent years.
She said, “We are just starting to see the changes. So, in 2011, we changed our licensing so it's more expensive for animals that were still intact. We also had the low-cost spay and neuter clinic open in the county.”
