AUBURN, N.Y. -- Auburn Police Chief Brian Neagle is "no longer respected in his role as Police Chief, and his inability to lead has rendered him ineffective."

That's one of many attacks on Neagle listed in a no-confidence document against the chief. The union is calling for Neagle to be fired, and 61 of 63 members voted no-confidence.

"I considered the fact that the membership voted the way they did to be a significant issue," City Manager Doug Selby said. "Whether the individual items add up to being substantive enough to take the kind of action the union is looking for is another question."

The union's no-confidence document criticized Neagle's leadership, claiming he deflects responsibility, and cited what they call multiple deceptive actions. They said that, as a result, the department has suffered a "drastically diminished level of morale."

"I need a little bit of time to digest this, talk to the chief about it, talk to corporation council, and determine an appropriate course of action," Selby said.

Selby is in charge of city personnel. He said the chief has not been disciplined for any actions listed by the union, and he questioned some of the issues raised.

"At this point, I continue to support the chief. I think he's done a good job for us," Selby said. "Unfortunately, there might be some issues with regard to communication and trust that we need to work on."

The union's affidavit said the only way the issues can be truly resolved is if Chief Neagle is removed from office. Neagle and union leaders did not respond to requests for comment.
