WHITESBORO, N.Y. -- Whitesboro city officials say they are now in the process of finding an artist to fix their seal despite the community saying they want it to stay the way it is.

Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" brought national attention to the village after wanting to do a story on the historic logo.

It's meant to show the village's founder in a friendly historic wrestling match with a Native American. But others say it's racist and shows the Native American being choked.

Officials say the seal has been criticized before, but when "The Daily Show" shared interest in doing a skit about it, the board decided it was time to do something.

After a poll, voters overwhelmingly voted to have the original seal remain.

Residents had a chance to share their opinions at the Village's board meeting Thursday night. Now that the public has had a chance to weigh-in, the mayor hopes things will calm down.

"It certainly was a roller coaster, and is a roller coaster, but ultimately it starts and stops with the people in the village that we serve," said Whitesboro Mayor Patrick O'Connor.

"People are always like, 'don't judge a book by its cover', but that's exactly what they're doing in this situation. And if people are so worried about hurting others and their feelings and such by this seal, maybe they should figure out why we would have depicted that image," said Nicole Olney, a former Whitesboro resident.

The mayor says there is no time set for when any kind of change to the seal will happen, but they are planning to hire someone to adjust it.
