Coming in at 42,000 pounds and 60 feet long, new articulating Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) buses are now hitting the streets of the Capital Region.

It’s unlike anything on the road. The unique accordion-style middle allows the bus to split in half while maneuvering through turns. It will hold up to 100 riders, nearly doubling the older models. Drivers had to take a training course before getting behind the wheel.

“They’re high capacity buses, designed for heavy urban use,” said CDTA CEO Carm Basile.

CDTA announced the buses will be used on greater demand routes, like Washington and Western avenues in Albany, as well as spots in Troy and Schenectady.

“The thought is to address capacity," Basile said. "Those are also routes that are growing, so that’s our way with keeping pace with growth. Trying to make sure everyone gets a seat, you’re not gonna see buses eliminated; you’ll just see more buses."

CDTA officials say they’re hoping to expand to 20 in the near future. If you see one on the road, just be alert.

“I don’t think you have to get out of the way or be extra cautious, just be aware," Basile said.
