HORNELL, N.Y. -- Cinder the cat who was found drenched in gasoline more than week ago has died.

A neighbor found the cat barely able to move on the side of the road and brought him to the Hornell Area Human Society. Cinder was recovering there and his caretakers said last week that he was beginning to eat and walk on his own. But he had lost a lot of fur and was on pain medications.

The humane society's president said Cinder died Sunday in the care of staff. The humane society released a statement:

"We will cherish the time we had with Cinder, although short as it was. We would like to thank everyone who donated to his care, whether it was their time, a loving hello to him, stopping up at the shelter to see how he was doing, and everyone who made monetary contributions for his vet bills. Cinder reminded us all of why were at the shelter. As we cared for him, all he wanted to do was return the affection to us. Cinder will be remembered always in our hearts."

Police are investigating the incident as a possible animal cruelty case.
