CHARLOTTE- The discussion of head injuries in the NFL is front and center stage again, because of Will Smith's new movie 'Concussion.'
He plays the role of Dr. Bennet Omalu, the man who discovered the link between football and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and concussions.
There's been some controversy because of the movie. Some saying it's going to scare people away from the game, but one doctor, told thinks it's going to benefit parents and young athletes.
"It's going to be those athletes who don't understand what a concussion is or may not understand how dangerous it is," said Dr. Smitha Ballyamanda from Piedmont Medical Center. "This is bringing that knowledge to the forefront so that we can avoid these kinds of deaths and these incidences, where you've got secondary impact, which is a complication of a concussion, where you could go into a coma, vegetative state or even die."
The Department of Veterans Affairs and Boston University tested 91 deceased NFL players for brain disease; 87 of them tested positive for CTE.
'Concussion' hits theaters Christmas Day.
