VESTAL, N.Y. -- More than 450 Binghamton University students walked across the stage Sunday afternoon as part of the final fall commencement ceremony ever.
After this year, the university has decided to only hold spring ceremonies each year, citing low attendance and less graduates participating as the reason for their decision.
For many students, walking across the stage at their graduation is a moment they'll remember for the rest of their life.
"It means a lot. Obviously I wouldn't be here without my family, my mom and dad. I've met some great friends along the way and it's been a great four years," said Connor Ferrito.
However, that opportunity will no longer be available. The university has announced that it no longer plans to hold fall commencement ceremonies.
"It seems like there's been low attendance in the fall. Most students finish in the spring so they decided to just combined them and have one large graduation each May," said Celia Klin, Harpur College Associate Dean.
This year, more than 450 students participated in the ceremony.
According to the university's website, it costs the school around $70,000 to hold a graduation ceremony.
Officials feel it's too costly, but, graduates say you can't put a price on the rewarding feeling when walking across the stage.
"I feel lucky. For everyone who graduates college, this is their goal to accomplish this and to be able to walk is something special. I'd like to see them continue to do it but I'm just happy I got the opportunity to," said Matthew DeLea..
Meanwhile this graduating class is looking forward to their next step.
"It's a tremendous accomplishment. The last four years have been pretty special and it just feels great to be moving on to the next chapter in my life,” said DeLea.
Students say they'll never forget the feeling of earning their diploma, and would like to see more graduates share that feeling.
The University has been holding fall commencement ceremonies since 2007.
