CONCORD -- There could soon be a new tenant at the International Business Park in Concord. FedEx Ground Package System is looking to build a distribution facility and office near the current Smart Post Division facility housed there.
"I've just watched it in these last two or three years mushroom, and it's just going to continue to grow. And this is a big part of that and another element that will add to that growth,” said Terry Crawford, the interim president and CEO of the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce.
FedEx and SunCap Charlotte, LLC asked for a government-based $67 million incentive grant to expand. The money, which includes a portion of property taxes, is well worth the investment, according to Concord leaders.
"The economy's doing much better but there are a lot of unemployed people or underemployed people here that could use a full-time job with benefits for their family,” said Mayor Padgett.
The company projects hiring 55 full time employees and 309 part time employees within five years, according the grant request.
The contract would be a three-year contract with an 85 percent tax-based grant. Mayor Padgett said construction would start soon, as FedEx is looking to move quickly.
