The corner of Cesar Chavez and South Flores in downtown San Antonio is a symbol of new and different.

"This will be the first full shop fresh grocery store in the downtown area," said Dya Campos, HEB Public Affairs Director.

The 12,000 square foot store is a first for the company.

" It's the smallest store we will run in our company," Campos said.

It's small in size, but the impact is expected to be huge as the city continues to attract more people to live and work downtown.

City leaders expect one million more people to call San Antonio home by 2040.

"Once you start living in the downtown area, you need to eat," said Richard Perez, President and CEO of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

There's grab-and-go for downtown employees, as well as a $100 bottle for a special occasion.

"We selected cheeses that would go with the 700 bottles of wine we have behind us," said Bernice Reyes with HEB Corporate Merchandise.

Building a neighborhood market to improve downtown didn't just mean groceries, but adding practical ammenities like parking and gas pumps.

"This will allow us to be able to drive, come right down, fill up, park and be able to go into the store," Perez said. "It has all the flexibilty one needs to live downtown comfortably and still get the things you need if you were living in the suburbs."

Between more housing and transportation routes, living comfortably in downtown is getting easier.

"With Central Market products being in house, all their freshly prepared items, especially our naked coconut, our paleo lifestyle item, it's going to be something for everyone," Reyes said.

HEB opens the doors officially at 7 a.m.Wednesday morning.

The first 500 customers will receive a commemorative bag to honor the late South Town artist Chuck Ramirez.
