SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Wednesday marked 14 years since the start of the the U.S. war in Afghanistan, and protesters were out to voice their opposition to the war and the increasing use of drones.
Activists kicked off the "Undrone Upstate" walk, which will take them 165 miles from Hancock Field Air National Guard Base to the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.
They rallied at the federal building on the way, and stopped at St. Joseph's Hospital to bring attention to a U.S. airstrike that hit a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Afghanistan over the weekend -- something some participants say constitutes a war crime.
"The use of surveillance and the weaponized drones is a form of targeted assassination. And again and again, whether it's been in Iraq or Afghanistan or Yemen -- in the countries where the drones are being used -- civilians are being killed," said Kathy Kelly, an activist.
Walkers are expected to arrive at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station on Oct. 20.
