COLUMBIA, S.C. - Torrential rain brought devastating flooding to a large part of South Carolina, including Columbia.
Floodwaters rose quickly in Columbia Sunday morning overtaking roads and parking lots and submerging cars.
The city saw 10 inches of rain in 24 hours.
Lake Catherine overflowed its banks turning this neighborhood's streets into rivers.
“They're going down house by house checking on people making sure they're out,” Zoltan Borbely, a neighbor, said.
Emergency responders and neighbors alike navigated the neighborhood by boat to make sure residents were safe, and they found some homes so flooded only their roofs were visible.
"Something caught on the propeller, and we docked the boat on the roof of a house," Jim Pagett, a neighbor, said.
The record rainfall closed more than 260 roads in South Carolina, including part of Interstate 95.
Those who live here said its devastation unmatched by any other weather event in recent history -- not even Hurricane Hugo.
"I've never seen anything like it and I don't think I'll see it again, hopefully," Pagett said.
