Albany emergency responders showed off a new way to fight fire from the Hudson River on Thursday.

The fire boat known as "Marine One" is now equipped to use foam to smother flames.

Although the boat sprayed water into the river for Thursday's demonstration and not foam.

The upgrade meets the goals of the 'New York State Foam Task Force,' which was created to address the potential dangers of transporting crude oil across the state.

The boat can fight fires burning on the shore, as well as fires burning on other boats in the water.

The new foam can safely tackle crude oil and other flammable liquids.

"What the foam does is it covers the liquid and basically smothers the fire, as opposed to extinguishing it in a traditional manner. However, without the foam, which we can utilize very easily as well, is plain water. And we use that in a traditional manner to put out the flames," said Albany Fire Deputy Chief E.J. Seney

Officials say the maritime foam capability is the first of its kind available in the area.
