NATIONWIDE -- Social media has a new user as former National Security Agency Contractor Edward Snowden joined Twitter on Tuesday.

Within just the first 30 minutes of his first tweet, "Can you hear me now?" Snowden's account had nearly 90,000 followers. That number jumped to over 100,000 a few minutes later.

Snowden's profile bio read, "I used to work for the government, now I work for the public."

Snowden's been living in Russia since he was granted asylum there after reading classified NSA documents to the media back in 2013.

Currently he's only following one account at NSA.gov.
