BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Some students know it as the drunk bus. Every 20 minutes from 8 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., buses run between the University at Buffalo's North and South campuses.

"You have so many students packed on and they find their way to these parties and it's almost insurmountable in some cases," University District Council Member Rasheed Wyatt, D, said.

Earlier this month, neighbors around the city's South Campus got together to talk about how to stop out-of-control parties. Wyatt said it's time the city and the school do something to help them.

"We really want to see those buses slowed down near the evening hours on the weekends because we know that's a big problem," he said. "We know that many of the students aren't going to the library at 10, 11 o'clock at night."

On a typical Friday or Saturday night, students coming from the Amherst-North Campus are dropped off down the street on the city campus. Wyatt said as soon as they're dropped off, you can see them walk straight down Main Street, looking for parties on the side streets like Winspear.

"I put an email into UB a couple of days ago to really give them a sense of urgency and we'll get this resolved. The residents have given me a mandate that they want to see this done because they're tired of this happening year in and year out," he said.

Students aren't necessarily happy with the idea though.

"There are also students who study also late at night and there is some kind of exchange in learning because they want to do homework with friends and those friends might live up in South," Tapang Ivo said.

"The cab from here to North I believe is around 20 dollars, $25," Ugo Obunadike said. "So that's expensive. I could've used that money for something else because I've already paid for the bus in the first place."

Wyatt believes the buses shouldn't run more than once an hour after nine.

"Some of us would like them shut down in the evening at 9 o'clock or at least have a mini van or something to transport the students who really have an educational purpose to come on to South Campus," he said.

The council members is planning on a small work session but is waiting on the university.
