LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. -- A Manhattan man is in the hospital and Hudson Falls teen is recovering after a boat explosion Tuesday night on Lake George.
According to the Warren County Sheriff's Office, Joseph Sheehan, 46, was refueling at Fischer's Marina and Hunter Tyminski, a 16-year-old dock aide, was helping. Sheehan started the ignition and the boat then exploded.
Sheehan was taken to Westchester Medical Center with serious burns to his body, and Tyminski was sent to Glens Falls Hospital with burns to his hand, face and legs.
The sheriff's office says staff at the marina attempted to fight the fire using fire extinguishers, and set the boat adrift to get it away from the other boats and fuel pump.
"When the salvage company pulled it out today, there wasn't very much left of it," said Nicky Cutro, Fischers Marina owner.
Cell phone video showed the 28-foot boat engulfed in flames. That's when Cutro says he and his staff jumped into action.
"I walked right on the boat and had a 10 pound fire extinguisher. The fire was contained to the bow of the boat."
Cutro says Sheehan was in the water at that point, near his vessel. Other staff members helped pull him from the water and prevent the fire from spreading to other boats.
"I took our work boat and pushed it out so it would get away and so the fire boats got here they could corral it better."
The Sheriff's Office says they believe something was turned on and had ignited inside the cabin, causing the explosion.
Cutro says it's another important lesson on boating safety.
"This time of year, everyone's gotten complacent the season's almost over. We have our last major holiday coming and the most important thing is you should always respect your environment."
Time Warner Cable News reached out to Tyminski, who said briefly over Facebook that he's at home, recovering.
