GREENSBORO — 200-to-400 crew members work on site every day -- adding pieces to UNCG's new Student Rec Building.

“We’re about halfway into the construction process right now," said Fred Patrick, UNCG Facility Design and Construction Director. "It’s a two-year project – we’re halfway there. It’s an exciting time period.”

Construction on the $91 million dollar project started about a year ago.
Last September, crews drove steel piles 30-to-40 feet into the ground.
Not that ground is covered by a sprawling 217,000-square-foot building.

“We’re a year out from having the opportunity to really expand and enhance the opportunity for students and campus recreation at UNCG," said Jill Beville, UNCG Campus Recreation Director.

Labor Day is the crews' goal to have the roof and all windows in place.
They then can start on more work inside the building -- where students, faculty, staff and alumni will find a broad range of offerings.

“It’s a great project," said Patrick. "We’re really excited about it. It’s got a three-story climbing wall, a really unique feature. Swimming pool, it features a weight room, elevated running rack, gymnasium.”

Beville added, “It is a lengthy process, a big process but its something we’re looking forward to.”

Construction is set to wrap up next summer and the center will open in the fall.

The center is funded entirely by student fees, which previously upset some students who said the university needed to focus more on education and less on expansions.
