SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Schenectady is teaming up with one of its local businesses to help reduce costs to its fleet of vehicles.
Mayor Gary McCarthy announced Wednesday, the city is working with Transfinder to outfit nearly 60 vehicles with GPS devices that will help track routes. Those include plows and garbage trucks.
For the last 27 years, Transfinder's software has focused on mainly school buses, but Schenectady becomes the first municipality to use it.
Mayor McCarthy says it will benefit not only the city, but residents as well.
"It will allow people, in real time will be the end product to see where a snowplow has been or where a it's going to be and likewise some of our garbage collection and other services where we deliver," said McCarthy.
It's much quicker. You can do this in minutes rather than waiting 30 days to make your changes and then see the results," said Transfinder President and CEO Antonio Civitella.
Civitella said the software pays for itself within the first year of operation because of reduced fuel costs and vehicle repairs.
