Everett and Stacy Residence Halls have stood for nearly 80 years.
But UNC Chapel Hill officials say the two will remain vacant following low housing enrollment.
Combined the halls house 189 students, but this fall semester they only had 135 sign up.
Overall, university officials anticipate 800 less students living in campus dorms this year.
"We're worried about that on a long term and a short term basis. We've got a strategic planning effort going on right now to access what's going on with campus housing, how we can make it more attractive in particular to sophomore students,” says Allan Blattner, the Director of Housing & Residential Education.
Students were notified of the change by e-mail and phone in late June, all were relocated by July 8th.
"Some of them chose to claim similiar space in other buildings, others of them chose to take a nice building or something they preceived to be nicer. Some of them went to our on campus apartments,” says Blattner.
Some students I spoke to who live on campus say they were surprised to learn of the two dorms closing.
"I thought that they had more than enough people, not just the opposite...not enough people to fill all the dorms up, so that was shocking,” says, Junior Jake Marchiafava.
But university officials say students are looking for more privacy and appartment style living quarters with access to kitchens.
House officials contend upgrades and extra amenities cost money, and it’s their top priority to keep housing cost effective.
“We want to make sure that we remain affordable to students. So we have to very carefully spread those dollars in really strategic and intentional ways.” Says Blattner.
According to the university’s website, room and board for the 2015-2016 school year costs about $11,000 per student.
