Each summer, kids from the Georgetown Church of Christ spend some time volunteering. This year, they were able to lend a hand close to home.

“I'm painting a house for someone who was kind of kicked out of it because of the flood and just trying to make it to where they can come back,” volunteer Tesa Wilder said.

It's work that will be continuing for months.

"People will respond quickly when a disaster happens, but recovery takes a lot longer, and so sometimes three months, six months, a year after there's still things that need to be done,” Mike Gravois with the Georgetown Church of Christ said.

Right now the clock is ticking for people with cleaning left to do.

"There's an Aug. 2 deadline for debris and trash removal, so we're working hard to get those remaining places, kind of those hard to reach places that still need to get things cleaned out,” Todd Salmi with ServeSanMarcos.org said.

ServeSanMarcos.org matches volunteers with jobs.

"We're transitioning from short-term disaster relief to long-term rebuilding and recovery, so what we are working on right now are repairing houses. We have several houses that are under repair,” Salmi said.

For the group from Georgetown Church of Christ, a couple of days of service will leave a lasting impact.

"I have had a lot of fun this summer,” Wilder said. “But this is equally enjoyable because it will make a difference and it has a long-term effect."
