LATHAM, N.Y. -- Another page is turned, in the reclaiming of the land of the former Latham Circle mall.
"The site need a very strong anchor and walmart is a very strong anchor," said Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan.
Built in the late 50s, the former shoping center sat vacant and decaying before the town demolished it, giving the highly trafficked corner a fresh start.
"The existing mall was deteriorating year after year and really the only way to do it was to demolish everything and start from scratch," said Mahan.
Walmart would become the first tenant of the new Shoppes at Latham Circle moving from its 20 year old location in Latham Farms to a new Supercenter site adding an additional 200 jobs.
"We've heard that Burlington Coat Factory is coming back... and I know they are working with 3 or 4 other stores," added Mahan of big plans for the rest of the site, which is under construction.
Mahan says in addition to headline stores, the site lends itself to another potential entertainment complex or restaurant. Walmart's Latham Farms location has closed and is another site up for potential development.
