WINSTON-SALEM -- Police are investigating an accident on U.S. Highway 52 that started around 7:00 a.m. near the Patterson Avenue exit.

Authorities say gunshots were also fired in the same area.

Two vehicles, a gold Hyundai Elantra and a teal, green or blue Volkswagen Jetta began shooting at each other near 14th Street and Cameron Avenue.

According to authorities, the Jetta chased the Hyundai on the highway while exchanging gunfire. Both cars exited the highway and the Hyundai ran a stop sign, collding with a maroon van.

The driver of the Hyundai ran from the scene after the accident, leaving behind two passengers. One was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and the other was uninjured.  

The Jetta also fled the scene of the accident.

Police are actively investigating the case and the the Jetta and its passengers, as well as the Hyundai driver have not been located.
