SHELBY, N.C. -- Less than 24 hours after police say Dylann Roof shot and killed nine people in a Charleston church, he boarded a plane in Shelby in handcuffs.

It all began in Kings Mountain when florist Debbie Dills spotted Roof on her way to work.

“I'm telling you the Lord had me where I needed to be. On Highway 74, he had me watching the news. He had me see all that. He did that,” said Mills.

She called her boss who notified police. Roof was then pulled over on Dixon Blvd. The Shelby Police Chief said he showed his ID to officers, and was taken to the police department without incident.

“We held him here. Waiting for the extradition process and the paperwork to be done. It was pretty uneventful actually,” said Chief Jeff Ledford.

Charleston police officers and FBI agents got to the Shelby police department as soon as they were notified of Roof's capture.

“The FBI has initiated an investigation into this matter and we are working jointly with our state and local partners to determine if a federal hate crime has been committed,” said John Strong, special agent in charge of FBI in NC.

Roof was escorted from the police department to the Cleveland County Courthouse in the afternoon.

He didn't answer any questions from reporters or show much expression.

An attorney said he waived his extradition in court and was also charged with homicide.

Roof was then put on a plane back to South Carolina, which caused a whirlwind of events for a small North Carolina town.

“It's obviously been a hectic day but they handled that very well, they handled it professionally. The big picture is that we were able to do something about what happened in Charleston and that's what it's about,” said Ledford.

The Shelby Police Chief says Roof was not questioned or interrogated while he was in Shelby.

That will all be done by the authorities in Charleston as the investigation continues and the legal process plays out.
