BINGHAMTON, N.Y.-- A Binghamton business is using a new power source to largely get off the electrical grid.
BatesTroy held an open house Wednesday to show off its new combined heat and power system. It uses natural gas to create electricity and cost approximately $1.5 Million. It was a four year process to get the system installed and was made possible through the Regional Economic Development Council, Empire State, NYSERDA, NYSEG, and Tioga State Bank.
Officials say this technology could someday make its way into our homes. Ron Kamen, the CEO of Earth Kind Energy, says "instead of having a boiler in our basement we will have a boiler that will also produce electricity and supplemental electricity. When you combine all technologies together it will be a brave amazingly new world."
BatesTroy employs more than a hundred people. The company provides health care linen and dry cleaning services.
