Employees at Turning Stone Resort Casino have a unique responsibility. Everyone from the restaurant servers, security guards to the managers represent the Oneida Indian Nation. Cara Thomas explains why recruiters ingrain the Nation's history into their employees from the very beginning.
Turning Stone Resort Casino continues to be one of the largest employers in Central New York and the Mohawk Valley with jobs in food and beverage, gaming, and hospitality.
"People want to come here to really enjoy themselves and have a good time and that makes for a very enjoyable place to work," said Greg Rogers, the employment manager at Turning Stone.
When hired, employees are not only trained in their specific fields, but take part in a unique orientation.
"All of our employees go through a new hire orientation which involves learning about the Oneida Indian Nation. They're the reason that we are here," said Rogers.
It's a two-day learning experience, where they learn how Turning Stone came to be, the history of the Nation in Central New York as well as the culture's morals and values.
"The welcoming nature, the commitment to the next generation, the commitment to the environment which really informs all of our business decisions, but are the core values of the Oneida Indian Nation," said Oneida Nation spokesperson Joel Barkin.
There are also opportunities for visitors to learn more about the Nation while staying at the resort. Pieces of artwork and artifacts are displayed throughout the facility.
"We find that to be one of the unique experiences you can get here you really can't find any where else," he said.
