CHARLOTTE -- A former day care worker faces child abuse charges after an infant was found unconscious earlier this month.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police started looking into this case on May 6, when they found an unconscious 5-month-old baby at Easter Seals Children's Center.
They arrested 45-year-old Rebecca Ann Wilt Jackson on Friday night and charged her with child abuse - inflicting serious bodily injury. She is no longer an employee at Easter Seals.
Police said the baby girl remains in serious condition at Carolinas Medical Center.
The state Division of Child Development's online records show that the state agency investigated the day care facility as well the day after the infant was found unconscious. They found that some caregivers working in the infant room did not complete the required safe sleep training. One worker didn't have that training at all.
The facility told the state on May 15 that it had corrected those problems, and the follow-up visit on May 18 confirmed no violations.
Easter Seals sent us a statement saying the allegations, if substantiated, would contradict Easter Seals' principles and values. They are cooperating fully with police.
