RALEIGH -- As family and friends heal after an emotional trial, Alexis Trost and Ken Lewis continue to work hard to preserve Jamie Kirk Hahn's legacy.
Lewis knew Jamie well and worked with her during his US Senate campaign six years ago.
"I was just impressed with her intelligence, her warmth, her passion for making a difference with her life and her experience at such a young age,” said Lewis.
The Jamie Kirk Hahn foundation has raised nearly $350,000 for various charities since October of 2013.
The executive director says they strive to connect and develop emerging leaders, much like Hahn herself.
She said the beautiful thing about Jamie and her spirit is she inspires so many people who never met her.
"Day after day I have people come up to me after an event that say, I wish I had the time to meet Jamie. She inspires me to do better to become more involved in my community and that's what we hope the foundation can do,” said Trost.
One of the foundation's signature projects is called Gathering for Good.
It is an effort that began in March of 2014, which involves reaching out to community leaders about critical issues across the state, and at the same time bringing awareness to many causes which Jamie cared about.
"Food and security, food justice, hunger, poverty, education. And so, bringing both individuals and organizations to the table together, we think that we can rise up the solutions that already exist in our community and find different ways to support them,” said Trost.
Making a difference in the lives of a new generation through humility, love and community service, just as Jamie had wanted.
