CHAPEL HILL -- Students in the Triangle have enjoyed the relaxation of several snow days over the last two weeks, but the snow is melting, the break is over and the snow days will have to be made up.
Last week the Chapel Hill Carrboro City School Board convened for an emergency board meeting and decided to have class on Memorial Day and some Saturdays before the calendar comes to a close.
Under state law, public schools must wrap up by the Friday closest to June 10, leaving school leaders with few options to make up the missed instructional time.
"Every school district is left with tough decisions to make, after that you have to choose between Memorial Day, Saturdays, spring break, none of them are good options, but that's what's we're left with," said Jeff Nash, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.
Though the decision is facing criticism amongst some parents on social media, Jeff Hall, the PTA council president of the school district said in a statement:
"It is the best solution under the circumstances. We would have loved to have maintained holidays, and the critically valuable teacher workdays and delayed openings. Unfortunately, Mother Nature saw things differently."
