FALCONER, N.Y. -- Kevin Tibbetts of Falconer watched his daughter Christin suffer from addiction for more than a year. She died of a heroin overdose in Feb. at the age of 23.

"My daughter was a loving, caring girl, but as a life is falling apart, you can't deny it, because you can see the proof of it," said Tibbets.

Tibbetts said that during the final months of her life, Christin lost her car, apartment and custody of her five-year-old daughter. After spending time in jail, she went home in an effort to stay clean.

"I had a false sense of security that my daughter was home and she was safe, and as a parent you want to believe your child, and that wasn't the case," said Tibbetts.

Tibbetts found Christin dead in her bedroom the next morning.

"Which no parent should have to go through, it's the hardest thing I ever, ever could imagine," said Tibbetts.

To help combat her addiction, Tibbetts said he would stage interventions and even tried checking her into the hospital, but was turned away.

"There's nothing I can do now except fight for other children and that's why I'm sitting here. For other parents, for other families," said Tibbetts.

"We're losing a whole generation of people," said Rick Huber, Mental Health Association CEO.

Huber is set to attend Chautauqua County's second annual community drug forum on Monday. The event will include speakers and presentations from last year's action teams in areas like prevention.

"The people that headed up those different action teams are going to give reports on what they're working on, what may have accomplished throughout the year," said Huber.

Tibbetts will also be there, sharing his story and asking lawmakers for a treatment center to help addicts like Christin.

"They need help stopping, they need medications, they need a detox, they need counseling. We're not offering that here in Chautauqua County. We can make a change, we can make a difference. This is where we live, who's going to do it if we don't," said Tibbetts.

The forum runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chautauqua Suites in Mayville.
