ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The snow was a headache for drivers on Monday, but for people who walk, it was just as treacherous. Parts of Alexander Street were covered, making sidewalks impassable for Tierra Reid.

“It’s very slippery; cars are spinning out on Monroe," Reid said. "I walk facing the traffic so they don't drive up behind me."

“Some parts are better than others. This is actually better than South Union, but there's a lot of snow to move, said Jason Sidebotham.

"It would be nice to walk on the sidewalks, especially since I just saw the sidewalk plow go by on the street,” said Steve Peet.

City contractors have been clearing sidewalks since Friday, but the removal of the snow doesn't rest solely on the city's shoulders. The city Environmental Services Commissioner, Norman Jones, said they step in when the accumulation is four inches or higher.

“In anticipation of the current storm we're dealing with now, we sent our contractor snowplows out to do a full residential run on the sidewalks," Jones said. "On the snow removal last night, we had an arterial run that dealt with the arterial sidewalks, which are your main streets like, Main Street, South Ave, Dewey Ave."

Jones said they started clearing those sidewalks around 3:30 a.m. and were finished by 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Jones reminded home and business owners that this is a partnership.

"If you would look at the city code as it regards to city sidewalks, it states that it's the homeowner or in the case of the commercial property, the ground floor tenants to clear the ground of snow, debris, upkeep and cleaning of the sidewalks," Jones said.

Despite the inconvenience, people were trying to look to brighter side of things.

“On a day like this when the city gets hit hard, it's kind of hard to keep up with the demand. By tomorrow, things will be better cleared,” said Peet.

If you are concerned your sidewalk has been missed or there's a particular problem area, you’re asked to call 311 to report it.
