WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- In the office where Lucy's House currently operates out of, artwork lines the walls.
Those masterpieces were created by local children who've received support from the non-profit after experiencing various types of violence.
"Our therapists will work slowly at the child's pace to kind of help them process what has happened. Depending on their age, there are different types of therapies that we use. We use play therapy, art therapy," said Lucy's House co-founder Robin Colello.
The non-profit wasn't just launched to help children, though. Counseling, mentoring and other services are also provided to adults.
Nearly 200 individuals have benefited from the organization thus far.
"We wanted to be able to provide evaluation and counseling to all children and families, regardless of income or insurance coverage so that everybody could get the proper care they need following a traumatic event," said Colello.
The non-profit already has plans to expand. It'll be moving into a larger office at the end of this month.
It also has big hopes for its education program in 2015.
"We're also going to be working closely with other agencies. One of our programs that we're going to connect with the Victims Assistance Center of Jefferson County and the Child Advocacy Center on is to try to educate more of our county, more individuals about preventing sex abuse," Colello said.
The non-profit is hoping that outreach will help reduce incidences of sexual abuse in the area.
