WASHINGTON -- North Carolina’s two newest members of Congress took the oath of office Tuesday evening on the House floor.

Republicans Dan Bishop and Greg Murphy both won special elections last week.

Bishop bested Democrat Dan McCready in the 9th Congressional District, which stretches along the South Carolina border from Charlotte to Fayettevile. Murphy beat Democrat Allen Thomas to represent the 3rd District, which includes much of eastern North Carolina.

The swearing in marks the first time in months that the Tar Heel State has a complete congressional delegation with 13 House lawmakers and two senators.

The 9th District seat has remained empty since January, amid an absentee ballot fraud investigation. The 3rd District has been without a representative since February, when Walter Jones passed away.

At Murphy’s office, they spent Tuesday unpacking and moving in. Murphy likens the transition process to drinking from a fire hose.

“But it’s been very good. It’s been great. People have been fantastic,” he said. “I’ve gotten so much support and encouragement from people in the 3rd District that I’m really just excited.”

Outside his office door, the faces of fallen members of the military from Camp Lejeune line the hall. The display was left behind by the man he is replacing: Walter Jones. Jones represented the district for nearly a quarter century and was known in later years for bucking party leadership.

“I did not agree with all his political issues, nor will everybody in the district. But the fact that he was a man who stood for things - he stood up and you knew where he stood - is something I will carry on in this office,” Murphy said.

A short walk up the street from Murphy’s office, Bishop also spent Tuesday settling in. He is working on building up his staff.

“It’s a grand day. I’m excited for the opportunity to take my service to the people of North Carolina to this new chapter,” he said.

Bishop’s election was a divisive one - the vote split nearly down the middle. Still, he says he believes he can effectively represent everyone in the 9th District.

“I want them all to have greater prosperity, more opportunity, better educational opportunity, healthcare that's affordable and effective and high quality,” he said. “There’s lots to be done that will benefit everybody.”

Both new congressmen said one of their first goals in office is to get their constituent services operations up and running, so they can help people back home.
