GREENSBORO, N.C. — Dozens of members of the unsheltered community gathered under a bridge in downtown Greensboro last weekend to hear the word of God.

Church Under the Bridge is a weekly worship service for the homeless community in Greensboro held by 16 Cents Ministry. They meet at 300 Spring Garden Street every Saturday to have church and provide a meal.

Mike Murray, the director of 16 Cents Ministry, said they have held this service every week for the past 10 years without missing a service.

“That was one of the core values. The Lord called us to be consistent," Murray said.

Murray isn’t an ordained pastor but he does have a heart for people.

Each week, he brings preachers and singers under the bridge to give a full church service. And he doesn’t just meet their spiritual needs.

“If you got somebody new on the street that needs something, we try to make that available to them so they won’t have to sleep on the actual sidewalk,” said Murray.

They also provide a hot meal with every service.

Murray said the idea for the ministry came after some members of his home church wanted to begin offering a second service. After their meeting, they would go out and hand out food to people living on the streets in Greensboro.

“That particular night, we took out six or seven meals. We came across an elderly lady on the street who was so taken back that someone wanted to feed her, she insisted on paying for it. So she scrounged around for 16 cents,” recalls Murray.

Since then, they have built a following of more than 200 members and attendees.

"It's been a wonderful thing to see people come out and not just for the food but for the message from God," said longtime attendee Rodney Dodson.

The ministry hopes to expand and provide more programs to the Triad homeless community.
