DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University will not allow upperclassmen to live on campus for the fall semester.

Administrators made the move over the weekend, citing the rising cases of coronavirus in North Carolina. The latest restriction will shrink the on-campus living population by 30 percent.

The impact will not only be felt among students, but also among nearby businesses, particularly those located on nearby Ninth Street.

Jermaine Bantum, 40, owns Triangle Coffee House. He says most of his customers and staff are students.

"It'll be tough but I think we'll still get some of those students in because a lot of off-campus students, they'll still come in here and study," he says.

Bantum remains optimistic his business will fully bounce back after losing 90 percent of his shop's revenue when Duke University first closed at the start of the pandemic.

"For the fact that people are going to be local in North Carolina, I think we'll have enough, push through and survive this," he says.
