RALEIGH, N.C. – Wake County and the city of Raleigh are on a mission to distribute 30,000 masks in the 27610 ZIP code community.

That area has the highest number of known COVID-19 cases in the county, and one of the highest in the state.

Saturday, volunteers with Alpha Kappa Alpha and Alumnae Delta Sigma Theta sororities spent their day passing out essential items, like masks and hand sanitizer, in an attempt to curb those trends.

"Well, we consider this area to be an underserved area where more attention needs to be focused," said Mary DesChamps, president of the Alpha Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. "The needs are greater, as you know it's been noted that COVID-19 has hit hardest in the 27610, so we wanted to be a part of making that a better situation."

Wake County is expected to share more locations and dates for these distribution events in the coming days.
