RALEIGH, N.C. – Several public service workers are demanding more protection after an employee died this week from the coronavirus.

Adrian Grubbs lost his life Wednnesday. Members of the UE Local 150 have been in talks with city leaders for more COVID-19 protection. They say Grubbs' death renews their calls for change.

"We're on the front lines...it's our lives and then we got children. We got family. We got friends," says Charlen Parker, Grubbs' co-worker at the Solid Waste Services facility.

The union sent a letter to city leaders Thursday with a list of 10 demands. They include testing all Solid Waste Services employees for the virus, increasing hazard pay, and allowing more time between rotating shifts.

City leaders have increased some measures such as quarantining those who had contact with Grubbs, providing gloves for workers, and staggering shifts. They say more accommodations could come as we get deeper in the outbreak.

"We've never been through something like this and the city manager, the city administration is responding absolutely as quickly as possible," City Council member Patrick Buffkin says.
