CHAPEL HILL- Jonah Lewis hopes to raise awareness about Cerebral Palsy with his stand-up comedy routine that’s getting a lot of attention.

  • Lewis, 20, is a junior at UNC and suffers from a congenital disorder
  • But, he doesn’t let his disability get in the way of him being a stand-up, or sit-down, comic
  • His bit often involves awkward encounters with strangers who don’t know how to talk to him

Lewis, 20, is a junior at UNC and suffers from a congenital disorder.

“I have trouble with balance, and like fine motor things are hard sometimes. So I use like a walker or a wheelchair to get around,” he says.

But, he doesn’t let his disability get in the way of him being a stand-up, or sit-down, comic. He performs at The Pit Chapel Hill about once a week. His bit often involves awkward encounters with strangers who don’t know how to talk to him.

“So, I want people to understand kind of what my life is like and that people with CP are normal,” he adds.

Lewis hopes his routine helps people understand CP.

“Hopefully, people have gone home and Googled it afterward,” he says.

He also has advice for other people with disabilities.

“Find something that you enjoy and give it a shot. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out. But, like there’s no harm in trying,” he tells Spectrum News.
