CHAPEL HILL -- First responders say on-street parking continues to pose a problem in one neighborhood.

  • Authorities say the streets are too narrow in the Burch Kove subdivision
  • Fire and EMS trucks have trouble driving between the cars to get through to emergencies
  • Ideas include reducing on-street parking or forcing it to one side. Another proposal includes building more parking spaces towards the back of the subdivision

Authorities say the streets are too narrow in the Burch Kove subdivision. Fire and EMS trucks have trouble driving between the cars to get through to emergencies.

"In some cases, we're having less than six inches on either side of the vehicle to be able to clear. Which doesn't allow us to get to incidents safely at all," says Fire Chief Matt Sullivan.

The town is currently proposing some solutions. Ideas include reducing on-street parking or forcing it to one side. Another proposal includes building more parking spaces toward the back of the subdivision.

Residents say they don't like the idea of reducing on-street parking. However, some are okay with doing so on one side.

"The town of Chapel Hill allowed for this to happen and they need to fix it," says homeowner Lariene Reilly.

Town leaders will take up the matter during the next council meeting in January.
