DURHAM, N.C. -- Family and friends paid their last respects to Floyd Clayton "Pete" Shankle, Jr.

The 67-year-old died last week after losing his fight with cancer. Mourners attended his funeral Tuesday.

"He was full of life and very positive. Very funny. He could always make you laugh," former co-worker Miriam Morgan Prather said.

Coach Shankle retired as a teacher and coach after 30 years of service at Southern High School and Voyager Academy. However, former players said it's what he did off the field that truly mattered.

"His legacy is more than baseball. He was a teacher. He was a mentor. He was a father figure to thousands of kids," A.D. Thorpe said.

Shankle received many awards during his career. In 2015, he was inducted into the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.

Shankle is now buried at the Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Durham.
