FAYETTEVILLE, NC --  Starting July 15, drivers in downtown Fayetteville will have to follow new parking rules.

  • New hours will be enforced from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday
  • City leaders said the purpose is to free up more space on the streets and encourage drivers to use the parking garages
  • Now, Mayor Mitch Colvin wants to remove enforcement on Saturdays and some shoppers agree

New hours will be enforced from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Currently, drivers can park from 9a.m. to 6p.m. Monday through Friday. City leaders said the purpose is to free up more space on the streets and encourage drivers to use the parking garages.

Now, Mayor Mitch Colvin wants to remove enforcement on Saturdays and some shoppers agree.

"I really don't think it's fair to...if you're trying to...if you're trying to expand the commerce and the business part of the city and revitalize the area," Fayetteville resident, David Fletcher said. "I mean if you look around there's still shops that are empty. There aren't any businesses there. I don't think it's very smart to try and enforce parking."

"Most cities don't really have enforced paid parking on Saturdays," Mayor Colvin said. "So I'm asking the council to reconsider that approach because we want to encourage people on the weekend to come down and spend time in this great downtown area."

Colvin said he and council members will meet in August to discuss having no enforcement on Saturdays. After July 15, violators on the weekend will only receive a warning.
