JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. -- A school system says a convicted felon is said to have used fake credentials to teach at a Johnston County high school.

  • Torians Adaryll Hughes was hired as a substitute teacher and coach at Cleveland High School, and eventually became a full-time teacher.
  • Officials said after an 8-month investigation, it turns out Hughes resume contained fake diplomas and transcripts.
  • Officials say by all accounts he was doing a good job instructing his class and performing above average as an assistant football coach.

Torians Adaryll Hughes was hired as a substitute teacher and coach at Cleveland High School, and eventually became a full-time teacher.

Officials said after an 8-month investigation, it turns out Hughes resume contained fake diplomas and transcripts.

He resigned last October after school officials learned about his fake credentials.

Hughes is charged with felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. He was given a $15,000 bond after being arrested June 20.

Officials say by all accounts he was doing a good job instructing his class and performing above average as an assistant football coach.
