FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Spring is always an attractive time here.

  • Downtown businesses report they are seeing an increase in customers after the recent home opener of the city's minor league baseball team, the Woodpeckers.
  • Tourism numbers are expected to increase with next weekend's Dogwood Festival.
  • The Big South Conference will play at SEGRA Stadium May 21-25.

This year, the season is also likely to be profitable. That's because downtown businesses report they are seeing an increase in customers after the recent home opener of the city's minor league baseball team, the Woodpeckers.

The Fayetteville Area Visitors and Convention Bureau tells us that tourism wise, the All American City has been on the upswing for a while, and those numbers are probably going to increase next weekend. That's when the annual Dogwood Festival happens. That event normally attracts around 200,000 visitors to the downtown area.

"Over the last 10 years, tourism has increased 54 percent for our community in spending dollars and statewide averages. Right now, Cumberland County's overnight visitation is a 120-130,000 people per month," said John Meroski, the CEO of the Fayetteville Area Visitors and Convention Bureau.

In May, another event will happen at SEGRA Stadium, the home of the Woodpeckers. That's when the Big South Conference will play its baseball tournament at the new stadium May 21-25.
