CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The CIAA Tournament is leaving Charlotte after 2020.

  • After 13 years, Charlotte has lost the CIAA tournament.
  • It will be held in Baltimore from 2021-2023.
  • The tournament usually has a heavy economic impact on the city, bringing in more than $50 million last year.

It was officially announced Tuesday morning that Baltimore will host the event between 2021 and 2023 at the Royal Farms Arena.

Charlotte has hosted the tournament since 2006. City council member Tariq Bokhari says the city should figure out why the organization decided to go elsewhere.

"I think what we have to do if that ends up being the case is really look at what our proposition was in comparison to everyone else's and figure out in a postmortem, what are we going to do differently next time,” said Bokhari.

Mayor Vi Lyles declined to comment on the news, but other officials it is a missed opportunity.

“If I was in a position to lose a 50 million dollar project, there would be some repercussions,” council member James Mitchell said. “[It's] a tremendous loss for our community and our brand.”

Last year, the tournament attracted 140,000 visitors to the city and had an economic impact of more than $50 million.

Charlotte, Baltimore, Norfolk, and Richmond submitted bids for the 2021 tournament.
