DURHAM, N.C. -- Helen McNeil dropped off her annual donation at Duke Children's Hospital Tuesday.

  • She crocheted more than 100 handmade hats, pillowcases, and books for more than 100 sick children.
  • She named the donation after her granddaughter, Ryan, who used to be a patient at the hospital.
  • Parents will pick through and wrap up the gifts and Santa will deliver them on Christmas Eve.

She crocheted more than 100 handmade hats, pillowcases, and books for more than 100 sick children. She named the donation after her granddaughter, Ryan, who used to be a patient at the hospital.

“Because we spent many Christmases here where we would rather be home. We just wanted to give something back to the kids,” said McNeil.

The hats and pillowcases feature cartoon themes.

“Characters like the Grinch are a big thing this year. We do Paw Patrol characters,” she added.

Parents will pick through and wrap up the gifts and Santa will deliver them on Christmas Eve.

“You know just something to give them a little smile, a little hope you know because sometimes it's not always good news that they get here,” said McNeil.
