"Cold temperatures tonight could turn roads into ice rinks tonight," said the governor, warning about black ice. "Watch out for deadly black ice, especially late tonight and tomorrow morning."

Cooper confirmed 2 storm deaths: a man that was killed in Matthews after a tree fell on a car, and a woman in Haywood County that was in hospice care.

Later on Monday, officials also announced an additional death in Yadkin Co. from cardic arrest while shoveling.

In Kinston the search is on for a trucker believed to be missing after a crash into a river.

"The State of Emergency remains in effect. Our National Guard troops are activated and 69 vehicles are deployed respond to the storm," said Cooper. "I know it’s early for our state to be hit hard by a winter storm, but it is an important reminder that we must be ready for whatever comes our way. Our state’s organized, experienced response to emergencies like this storm and Hurricanes Florence and Michael has been effective. In the coming months, we will not let our guard down."

Reminding residents to be careful when traveling, Col. Glenn Mcneil of the State Highway Patrol said, "Don't assume that if a road is scrapped that it is clear of hazards. Maintain a safe speed if you have to go out and travel and watch for falling trees/branch."
