WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- A new sheriff in Wake County could come with some policy changes.

  • Gerald Baker was sworn in at midnight
  • One major campaign promise for Baker centered around a federal immigration program
  • He also plans to restructure the office and add more staff to several units

Gerald Baker was sworn in at midnight, followed by a public oath of office ceremony Monday morning at Elevation Baptist Church.

One major campaign promise for Baker centered around a federal immigration program that allowed the sheriff's office to turn over undocumented immigrants charged with crimes to federal immigration authorities.

Baker campaigned on the promise to end Wake County's participation in it.

He also plans to restructure the office and add more staff to several units, addressing crime prevention and assistance for victims and domestic violence.

Baker is a 28-year retired law enforcement veteran and has worked in every division of the sheriff's office.
