RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina’s Department of Transportation's Aviation Division is teaming up with WakeMed hospitals in a new effort to use technology to help save lives.

  • The first round of test flights will take place at WakeMed Hospital’s Raleigh Campus from Aug. 29-31.
  • The test flights will carry simulated medical packages from Raleigh Medical Park to the main hospital.
  • NCDOT will host a public meeting to educate and answer questions on Thursday.

Drones are becoming more common in law enforcement, helping officers to track down criminals and find missing people.

Now, they're being used to deliver life-saving blood and medication to patients in need.

WakeMed will be working with NCDOT to make that happen in Raleigh and the first round of test flights will take place Wednesday.

The drones will be carrying simulated medical packages from Raleigh Medical Park on Sunnybrook Road to the main hospital building in southeast Raleigh.

Thursday, NCDOT will host a public meeting to answer questions from anyone who wishes to attend.
