DURHAM, N.C. -- Thousands of families were able to get the tools they needed to get the new school year started off right with help from the Durham Rescue Mission.

About 3,000 backpacks, filled with school supplies, were collected over several weeks and handed out Thursday morning to families in need.

Most schools on a traditional calendar start classes on Monday.

There was even food for all -- pork shoulders roasted on the grill and 8,000 hot dogs.
