SCOTLAND COUNTY, NC -- For the 2018-2019 school year, all students grades K-12 must have a clear book bag in one North Carolina county.

  • For the upcoming school year, students must have a clear book bag in Scotland County
  • The idea came after students were caught with guns
  • School board will meet to discuss installing metal detectors

School officials said the idea came after two students were charged with bringing a gun to Scotland High School in May 2018.

The new policy was implemented in hopes of preventing students from bringing a weapon to school. The district said they'll provide every student with a padded case for their laptops. However, some parent have different views on the policy.

"My daughter had an L.L.Bean book bag for school last year," parent in Laurinburg, Micialea Terry said. "The bag still looks nice and new. Now, I have to go spend more money and buy her a clear book bag."

The clear book bag policy doesn't include lunch boxes, personal hygiene bags or pencil cases.

"It's just a book bag, you know what I'm saying," parent in Laurinburg, Michael Banks asked. "I can see if they were making them wear clear clothes, but they're wearing clear book bags. It's just something simple just to keep the kids safe. If it's for their safety, then I think it's a good thing."

The school board will have a meeting on Monday, July 23 to discuss getting metal detectors installed.
