FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. – Police in Fuquay-Varina have charged a man in connection to an overnight murder.

• Body found on East Broad Street.
• David Wendell Dixon has been charged with murder.
• Victim identified as Monterio Whitehead.

Police received a suspicious person call to the 700 block of East Broad Street around 2 a.m. Monday.

When officers arrived, they found 16-year-old Monterio Whitehead dead.

Police charged 27-year-old David Wendell Dixon with Whitehead's murder.

They say Dixon first encountered Whitehead and another man at the Fuquay-Varina Walmart where Whitehead asked to use Dixon's cellphone.

Dixon agreed but police say Whitehead fled with the phone. Dixon chased him in his vehicle and eventually ran Whitehead over.

Town officials say this is the first homicide investigation in Fuquay-Varina in two years.
